On March 23, 1840, John B. Hayward wrote a letter concerning the Christians at Cloverdale, IN, stating that they are Christians that follow the New Testament pattern in all things in the establishment of the church in that frontier community. He added, "May the Lord prosper these brethren in their anointing of the spirit of promise, till they shall fill the ancient measure of the Jerusalem church." This was written of the ancestors of the church that has continued to meet here in Cloverdale since before 1837.
By the time John Hayward wrote those words, it is reported that the church at Cloverdale had 60 members meeting in a log meeting house at what is now South Grant and Boone Streets. Within a year after the church was set in order according to the New Testament pattern with elders and deacons, the church was reported as having about 150 members.
In 1858, the building where the church at Cloverdale now meets was built. The original building was a 40 X 75 foot structure designed for public worship and preaching. At the time, no classrooms or baptistry were constructed. Now 150 years later, with the addition of classrooms and baptistry, the church at Cloverdale still meets in the original structure contructed for the preaching of God's word.
The Church of Christ in Cloverdale was established on the solid foundation of Jesus Christ as Lord. Plain, powerful and persuasive preaching of the Bible as God's inspired Word met with acceptance in the hearts of those who heard the word and who made up that original body here. Just as those who came before us, the current body of Christians here at Cloverdale 150 years later believe the same plain, powerful and persuasive preaching we get each time we meet.
Much of what is written on this page came from the first chapter of "Filling the Ancient Measure," a history of the Church of Christ at Cloverdale, written by Raymond L. Muncy, and is available from the Clovedale Church of Christ.
